Coming Soon: Gold in Your 401(k)?
President Trump has signed Executive Order 14330, a sweeping change that could forever alter how Americans invest for retirement.
It orders regulators to open 401(k) plans to investments they’ve long kept out, including commodities like gold.
If finalized, millions of Americans could get access to physical gold in their 401(k)s, potentially in 2027.
Wall Street is already getting ready. BlackRock has launched new funds for the demand it expects. And J.P. Morgan strategists say a massive wave of new demand could send gold toward $8,500 an ounce.
But is gold actually a smart addition to your retirement portfolio?
Gold’s Long-Term Performance
In 2025, gold went from $2,624 to $4,325 an ounce, a gain of about 64% in a single year.
That was a strong year for gold, but not a fluke. Since 2000, gold has beaten the stock market by a wide margin, even counting every dividend stocks paid:
Gold vs. Stocks Since 2000
Total change, end of 1999 to Oct 13, 2026
$100,000 in 2000 is now about $1.44 million in gold, vs. $866,000 in the S&P 500.
And it held up when it mattered most. In the 2008 financial crisis, the S&P 500 fell 57%. Gold rose 26%.
For money you’ll need in retirement, that difference matters.
Here's What Most Americans Don't Realize
While most people wait for the new 401(k) rule, you don’t have to.
There’s an IRS-approved process that already lets you buy physical gold with your retirement savings today.
It’s called a gold IRA: real coins and bars, held in your own retirement account.
- If your savings are in an IRA, you can move some of that money into a gold IRA right now, at any age.
- If your savings are in a 401(k) or TSP, you can roll some of that money into a gold IRA once you’re 59½ or have left that job.
Done as a direct rollover, the move is:
✔ Free of taxes
✔ Free of early-withdrawal penalties
That means you can beat the rush to gold without losing the tax benefits of a retirement account.
With Executive Order 14330 now signed, the timing has never been clearer:
- Gold prices rose 64% in 2025
- J.P. Morgan strategists say gold could reach $8,500 an ounce
- Billionaire hedge fund manager Ray Dalio now recommends a 10–15% gold allocation for all investment portfolios
